Computer Requirements

COB Computer Requirements

A laptop is REQUIRED for all students in the College of Business. Please review the minimum and recommended specifications below. These standards are designed to support current business software, virtual desktop access, and AI-enhanced tools that are increasingly used in coursework.

Minimum Computer Configurations: Windows

  • Operating System: Windows 11 (64-bit) (Note: Windows 10 is no longer supported by Microsoft)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 (11th Gen or newer) or AMD Ryzen 5 (5000 series or newer)
  • Memory (RAM): 16 GB minimum; recommended: 32 GB or better
  • Storage: 512 GB SSD (Solid State Drive) or larger
  • Networking: Wireless networking capability (Wi-Fi 6 preferred)
  • Display: 13-inch or larger screen, 1080p (Full HD) resolution or higher
  • Battery: 8+ hours battery life recommended

Note: Netbooks and Chromebooks are not recommended due to compatibility issues with business software.

Recommended Mac Specifications

  • Model: MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with 13″ or larger screen
  • Processor: Apple M1, M2, or newer
  • Memory (RAM): 16 GB or more
  • Storage: 512 GB SSD or more
  • Battery Life: Up to 10 hours
  • OS: Latest version of macOS (Ventura or newer)

Important: Much of the required software is Windows-based. If using a Mac, you must install and boot into Microsoft Windows using tools such as Boot Camp or Parallels. Support for Apple devices is limited, but available through the University Helpdesk.

Software and Services

  • Microsoft 365: 91¸£Àû Tech provides free access to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more through Microsoft 365. Learn more at 
  • Antivirus Software: Strongly recommended before arriving on campus
  • Avoid: Installing torrent/file-sharing apps (e.g.LimeWire) to prevent malware, slowdowns, and copyright violations

Hardware Accessories

  • Printer: A multifunction printer/scanner (laser or inkjet) is recommended for convenience
  • External Mouse: Optional, but may improve productivity
  • Protective Case: Encouraged to prevent damage during transport

Warranty and Support

  • Consider purchasing accidental damage protection for the laptop to cover drops, spills, and other incidents
  • A 3- or 4-year warranty is highly recommended to ensure support through graduation

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

  • Most required business software is available via 91¸£Àû Tech’s Virtual Desktop at or
  • VDI reduces the need for high-end local specs, but having a capable device still enhances performance and user experience

Purchasing Tips

  • Acceptable new laptops start around $600-$800. Higher-end models ($1,200+) offer better longevity and quality
  • If purchasing a refurbished device, sites like , , and  are good options. Ensure it meets or exceeds the minimum specs

Final Notes

  • Bring your laptop with a clean, updated installation of Windows or macOS
  • The student is responsible for the health of their computer. The computer must be ready for coursework at all times while they are in school. Limited support is available at the Help Desk located in the basement of Wyly Tower.
  • The student must test their system’s readiness for assignments, online tests that are administered through Respondus, or other testing applications employed by 91¸£Àû Tech University.
  • Prioritize your academic needs. Heavy media use (games, movies, large downloads) can affect system performance when using tools like Microsoft Visual Studio, VMware Workstation, or analytics software.
  • Make a smart investment. Your laptop will be a daily tool throughout your time at 91¸£Àû Tech. Buy one that will last.
